Cycling of black carbon in the ocean

چکیده

Black carbon (BC) is a byproduct of combustion from wildfires and fossil fuels and is a slowcycling component of the carbon cycle. Whether BC accumulates and ages on millennial timescales in the world oceans has remained unknown. Here, we quantified dissolved BC (DBC) in marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) isolated by solid phase extraction (SPE) at several sites in the world ocean. We find that DBC in the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans ranges from 1.4 to 2.6 M in the surface and is 1.2 ± 0.1 M in the deep Atlantic. The average 1C age of surface DBC is 4,800 ± 620 1C yrs, and much older in a deep water sample (23,000 ± 3,000 1C yrs). The range of DBC structures and 1C ages indicates that DBC is not homogeneous in the ocean. We show that there are at least two distinct pools of marine DBC, a younger pool that cycles on centennial timescales and an ancient pool that cycles on >10 year timescales. Comparative assessment of population biology of three popular pomfret species, Pampus argenteus, Pampus chinensis and Parastromateus niger in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh

Pomfrets are one of the most ample high priced fisheries of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. The present study featuring the comparison of the life history parameters of three Pomfrets i.e. Silver (Pampus argenteus), Chinese (P. chinensis) and Black (Parastromateus niger) is based on the monthly length frequency data from the commercial landings from July 2015 through June 2016. The length (TL) o...

Tuning of fuzzy logic controller using an improved black hole algorithm for maximizing power capture of ocean wave energy converters

Seas and oceans are the most important sources of renewable energy in the world. The main purpose of this paper is to use an appropriate control strategy to improve the performance of point absorbers. In this scheme, considering the high uncertainty in the parameters of the power take-off system in different atmospheric conditions, a new improved black hole algorithm is introduced to tune fuzzy...

Effect of carbon black content on the microwave absorbing properties of CB/epoxy composites

To prevent serious electromagnetic interference, a single-layer and double layer wave-absorbing coating employing complex absorbents composed of carbon black with epoxy resin as matrix was prepared. The morphologies of carbon black /epoxy composites were characterized by scanning electron microscope  and atomic force microscope, respectively. The carbon black  particles exhibit obvious polyarom...

Ocean Acidification and Oceanic Carbon Cycling

The concentration of atmospheric CO2 is increasing due to emissions from burning of fossil fuels and changes in land use. Part of this “anthropogenic CO2” invades the oceans causing a decrease of seawater pH; this process is called “ocean acidification.” The lowered pH, but also the concomitant changes in other properties of the carbonate system, affects marine life and the cycling of carbon in...

Interactive comment on “Photo-lability of deep ocean dissolved black carbon” by A. Stubbins et al

Stubbins et al provide a concise study on photolability of dissolved black carbon (DBC) in seawater. The discussion paper is timely and the presentation of the study was well conceived; it was very easy to follow this paper and to understand the importance of DBC in global carbon cycling. A major outcome of this paper was the tight coupling between CDOM (the absorptive property of DOM) and DBC....
